While composting instructions vary, most share the same basic principles. Generally, passive composting methods are most often used. This method involves small piles of compost contained in a bin, enclosure, or compost containers. These, too, vary with sizes ranging between 5 to 7 feet (1.5 to 2 m.) around and 3 to 4 feet high (0.9-1.2 m.)
The basic steps for composting are: Layering. Watering. Turning. Repeating. Begin by building your compost bin on well-drained soil. I laid a layer of flagstone and gravel in my bin, to aid with drainage. Fill your backyard compost bin with a 6-inch layer of “brown” matter and a 2- to 3-inch layer of “green” matter.
Finished compost can be used to: mulch or “top dress” planted areas, amend to soil prior to planting, or as a component in potting media. Add about two inches of compost to new beds and about one inch of compost each year to existing beds. Incorporate the compost into the soil as much as possible.
To create a successful compost pile, you need to have a mix of ingredients that provide carbon and nitrogen as well as water and air to help with the breakdown. “Browns” are typically dried or dead

Ensure that the materials you add to your rotating barrels are in the right ratio. A carbon to nitrogen ratio of 25 is a good fit for most compost tumblers. It is recommended that all materials are shredded to small pieces. This helps to speed up the decomposition process. The best way to use a rotating barrel is for batch production. Pile Maintenance. Maintenance of the compost pile involves turning the pile and adding water to maintain conditions conducive to the composting process. If the pile is not turned, decomposition will occur, but at a slower rate. The following maintenance procedure will yield compost in the shortest time. Link to page.
Compost bin Step 1 Stand your compost bin directly on the soil – worms and other micro-organisms will speed up the composting process. Chicken wire at the base will keep rodents out. Add an equal mix of green and brown materials. Green and brown material to be composted Step 2
Water Your Compost Pile Marty Baldwin Sprinkle water over the compost pile regularly so it has the consistency of a damp sponge. Don’t add too much water or the microorganisms in your compost pile will become waterlogged and drown. If this happens, your pile will rot instead of compost.
Step 4: Leave to Rest. The first batch can use activators like cow or horse manure, fertile soil, or old compost. After this, the tumbler is left alone with a closed lid. When the waste materials start decreasing in volume, leaving room for more, it’ll heat the tumbler. Decomposition is an exothermic process.
